FAQ

Q: Can I sign-up online?
A: That would be great, wouldn’t it? But unfortunately we do not have those capabilities. You need to stop by the Cook-DeWitt Center, on GVSU’s Allendale campus, to register for a trip. We are unable to reserve you a spot until we see your smiling face!

Q: What if my trip leaves during the week and I still have classes?
A: It is your responsibility to be excused from classes for Friday, March 2nd. Please talk to your professors if you have not already done so. Remind them that this is a service opportunity, not a vacation. If they require a letter or verification please email us with your name, your professor’s name, the class you will miss, and the time of the class.

Q: The trip that I want to go on is full, can I still go?
A: We do have a waiting list available for all trips that run up until the day the trip leaves in case someone drops off. Although, if you are interested in a certain ministry and that specific trip is full, please stop in and speak with any campus minister to discuss different options.

Q: What if I don’t have enough money to go?
A: Money should never be an issue when it comes to serving. Consider sending tailored to your trip to friends and family who may feel called to support you. (You can find a copy of this letter SOON on our website) All who support you can receive a tax deduction for their donation. If you have further questions, any Campus Ministry staff member would be happy to discuss further options with you.

Q: I’ve signed up, paid my $$ and now I can’t go, what should I do?
A: The $75 deposit is non-refundable… sorry! You must let the Campus Ministry Office aware that you are unable to go as soon as possible. Please be aware that $150 is non-refundable on/after January 30, 2012 as we will have made significant payments for your trip by then.

Q: Where should I park during SB12?
A: Parking details soon to come.

Q: How do I know how much support money I’ve raised?
A: The office staff for Campus Ministry have a running list of everyone who has supported you, how much they gave, and their address. If you are curious, feel free to stop by at anytime during our office hours and have them print you a list Please be sure to send a thank-you note BEFORE and AFTER your trip.

Q: Can I bring my cell phone?
A: Yes you may bring a cell phone, but please use it as little as possible. You are on this trip to make new friends and impact a community. Your cell phone will NOT help you with that.

Q: How much can I pack?
A: PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE…… Limit yourself to one MEDIUM size suitcase and one carry-on. If you are flying your bag MUST be less than 50lbs. If you are worried about packing consider purchasing vacuum packing bags. They are available at Linens and Things, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc.

Q: What if my grandma wants to give me money and she wants a tax deduction, what should I tell her?
A: All donations are tax deductible, please stop into the Campus Ministry office, located in the Cook DeWitt to request or pickup a receipt that we would be happy to send to your Grandma or anyone else who feels called to donate!

Q: What if I have a friend from another school who wants to come on a trip, can they sign up?
A: Although we do have limited spots available, please speak to any Campus Minister if you have a friend who is interested. We might not be able to accommodate everyone, but we would sure like to try!

Q: I’m not very qualified at most construction projects; can I still go on a trip?
A: YES! We will take anyone who is willing.

Q: What should I not bring on SB12?
A: Alcohol, drugs, other illegal substances, and a poor attitude.

Q: What should I pack?
A: Your point leader will inform you of all specific clothing, bedding and toiletries necessities. As always, be aware of the weather and dress accordingly. Note, that some trips may require specific apparel according to the context or culture you are working within. Be sure and PACK LIGHT!!!

Q: Should I pack food?
A: We recommend bringing a few light snacks for yourself if need be; especially if you are driving to your destination. As always, people love when you bring enough to share around! Keep in mind again, if you are flying or traveling out of the country, please be aware of airline’s policy on outside food.

Q: Is there a phone number my family call in case of emergencies during the trip?
A: Missions Coordinator Jenn Anibal will be available via cell the entire week as will Campus Minister, Chris Pieters. Jenn can be reached at 248-915-8770 and Chris can be reached at 616-403-9869. Any questions before the trip can be directed to the Campus Ministry office located in the Cook De-Witt Center or via phone at 616-331-3130 and/or via e-mail.

Q: Should I bring spending money?
A: You should plan on bringing at least enough money to cover the cost of your food expenses during your travel time to and from your final destination, (we recommend at least $75). Additionally, if you would like to purchase “extra” items, i.e. souvenirs, theme park admission, etc, please remember you need to eat on the way home too.

It is a GREAT idea to bring your ATM card!

Q: What should I do if I need to take medication?
A: You do not need to inform your point leader of medication you are taking, unless your medication is a means of life. Please note though to leave your medication in its original labeled bottle, especially if you are flying and plan on carrying on your meds.

If you are flying and your medication is in liquid form, please visit the following link or container requirements.

Q: Do I need a passport?
A: Not for the continental U.S. but if you are going on an international trip you definitely need a passport.

Q: How do I find answers to my questions that are not listed here?
A: Email the Spring Break Team @ cm.springbreak@gmail.com
